It’s the most wonderful time of the year…..

With the days of Expo West 2012 drawing near, I have been reflecting on how my first experience (last year) completely changed my life. I can remember being in awe of the massive number of people this convention drew and the beautiful booth exhibits with products on display. I was able to meet some of the industry’s most famous figures, from Gary Hirshberg to Sara Snow. I left Anaheim with an unusual sense of fulfillment.

I am extra excited for this year’s event because I will be speaking at the Women in Naturals event about Cynthia’s mentoring role along with two of her former students. I am honored and delighted to have this opportunity and Friday night cannot come fast enough!

Since last March my focus has shifted from chemicals in cleaning products to social media and special events, however I would like to share a story from last year’s show as it exemplifies the kind of serendipity that happens at this wonderful event. As a marketing major, not a science major, I found it difficult to frame my research. Struggling to ask the right questions, I found myself at a loss for information.

My favorite part about Expo is the opportunity to meet people you would not have otherwise. It was ironic that I would meet the person who would help me begin to form the right questions for my research on the last day, waiting to check out of our hotel. I noticed a gentleman in line wearing a Clorox polo shirt and I decided to strike up a conversation, telling him about my POB research and asking if he could answer some of my questions regarding their products.

As it turns out, I had met Gregory Van Buskirk, one of the individual’s behind the Clorox Green Work’s line who knew a great deal about green cleaning products. Speaking on the phone with me some weeks later, he shared his knowledge of green chemistry and the creation of the Green Work’s line. I will always be grateful for his help.

That’s the beauty of Expo. It is an event which brings people together who all share a common goal and mission of creating a safer and more sustainable future in business. I couldn’t be more excited to attend Expo again and see what new surprises are in store for me this year!
