Wrap Those Leftovers Safely!

Leftovers Pic
The day after Thanksgiving can be a sad day for many; the best meal of the year has been consumed and enjoyed and now we reminisce, daydreaming about the perfection of the golden turkey, creamy mashed potatoes, and scrumptious pumpkin pie during our black Friday shopping hauls. In order to maintain the Thanksgiving spirit for as long as possible, we make sure to pack up the left overs from our kitchens at home in order to bring a small slice of mom and dad’s cooking back to school. When storing Thanksgiving left overs, always choose reusable glass containers over plastic containers.
Plastic is usually labeled by a small number surrounded by a triangle which refer to resin codes that describe what each type of plastic is made from. #3 polyvinylchloride, #6 polystyrene, and #7 other/polycarbonate are common plastics that are known to leach toxic hormone disrupting chemicals.
Here are some left over storage methods to watch out for:
  • Cling wrap is most often made out of #3 PVC plastic. This soft plastic is created with the addition of plasticizers such as phthalates, which are well known endocrine disruptors.
  • Styrofoam cups, disposable take out containers, and plastic cutlery are most often made out of #6 polystyrene plastic. Styrene has been classified as a human carcinogen, and is known to leach into food and beverages.
  • Some plastic storage containers and water bottles are made out of #7 other/polycarbonate plastic. Foods and beverages stored in these containers may contain hormone disrupting BPA.
Preserve the pleasure of the best meal of the season by choosing glass storage containers!
