Beat the Heat with a Safer Sweet Treat

There’s no betchristina headshot 2015ter way to cool off after a long day in the sun than enjoying ice cream – a popular summertime treat. Summer is a time to be carefree (for students, especially) and the last thing we should have to worry about is endocrine disruptors in our favorite ice creams.

Many conventional ice creams are made from milk that contains recombinant bovine growth hormone (rBGH). This hormone is injected into cows to increase their milk production, but, unfortunately, this hormone remains in the milk that is then used to make ice cream. rBGH has been linked to breast cancer and found to act as an endocrine disruptor in humans, interacting with normally functioning hormones to send erroneous messages to our bodies.

Choosing certified organic ice creams, whether they are homemade or store-bought, will ensure that they are free of artificial growth hormones, including rBGH. You can still enjoy all of your favorite flavors, but choosing an organic option is a small change you can make that can help prevent a breast cancer diagnosis in the future.
