Safer summertime sweets

It is sweet summertime… a time to indulge. No matter how old you are or where you are from, an ice cream on a hot summer day is the perfect remedy. And where you get it is almost as important.

Everyone argues that their favorite creamery, ice cream stand or brand is the best. I think homemade always wins. Luckily, local homemade organic ice cream is a safer alternative to the conventional version.

Ice cream that is not labeled organic may contain toxins that lead to an increased risk of breast cancer.  What? I asked for sprinkles!

Growth hormones and specifically rBGH (recombinant bovine growth hormone) are often injected into dairy cows to increase milk production. This hormone remains in the cow’s milk, which is then made into ice cream and other dairy products.  The risk comes when we consume these products because they have the ability to alter our natural hormones.

Due to the lack of labeling it can be difficult to see if your ice cream was made from rBGH-free milk. According to the USDA, organic labeled products come from animals that were not given growth hormones or antibiotics (http://www.nal.usda.gov). “Organic” and “hormone-free” are certifications to ensure safer food. By choosing safer foods you may significantly reduce your risk of getting breast cancer.

So if you can’t get to your favorite local and organic spot you don’t have to worry.  Just keep an eye out for “organic” or “hormone-free” labels so that you can enjoy your ice cream…even after it’s gone!
